200 people had gathered in Chelsea Road to celebrate the death of Baroness Thatcher.

Bottles and cans were thrown at officers, six of whom suffered injuries. One remains in hospital.

A police vehicle was damaged and one person was arrested for violent disorder.

As Britain received the news that Baroness Thatcher had died, not everyone was in mourning.

In Brixton, south London – the scene of fierce rioting in the 1980s, blamed on deep social divisions as well as racial tensions – a hastily convened party was gathering pace.

“Thatcher herself, she represents so much of what people hate about what has happened to Britain in the last 20, 30 years,” said 40-year-old graphic designer Ben Windsor.

Some people shouted: “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, dead, dead, dead.” Credit: PA

One woman, who gave her name as Claire, said: “That woman made my youth a misery. I think that she was to blame for most of the ills of society. And most of the things that poor people and ill people are now being blamed for were her fault.”

Another demonstrator said: “She started the whole neo-liberal madness we’re all suffering from now.

“People in Brixton suffered. People in Brixton suffered directly because of her policies.”

If the government want to cut the social security bill, then the government should stop paying top-ups to low wages and make employers pay a decent minimum wage. Why should the taxpayers have to top-up wages through paying into the system, when if public sector and private sector companies and employers paid a proper wage the taxes could be better used to heal the British economy. Instead, people on a low wage have to claim benefits to top-up their wages.

Once again it is the private sector that are raking in the money by being wage-shy, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

We are being made to pay for the irresponsible behaviour of our chancellor, with our taxes; and he still believes that his way is the right way.
